What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healing in the world. It began in China and has a clinical history of no less
than 2,500 years. It remains an important source of medical treatment in Asia and is one of the fastest growing health care
professions in the Unites States and Western Europe. A broad diversity of acupuncture styles exist, including the classical
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Korean hand therapy, Japanese meridian style, the French style and five-element acupuncture.
TCA is practiced based upon Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is a complete healing system used to assess and treat illness,
prevent disease, and improves overall health and well-being. This ancient Chinese therapy has been practiced for over 3,000 years.
Derived from and inspired by TCA, on the other hand, Medical Acupuncture establishes itself on the modern medical sciences such as
neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. It intends to induce positive neurologic responses, enhance chemical release and alter blood flow
in the central nervous system as well as musculoskeletal system. The purpose is to reduce the experience of pain or stress
level and improve therapeutic result of healing.
Traditional Chinese medicine includes eight modalities, acupuncture, moxbustion, herbs and tuina (massage).
Nutritional therapy feng shui, Qi gong and cosmetology, while acupuncture and herbals are already quit well know,
the other TCM modalities are becoming more widely recognized as practitioner apply these subtle energetic sciences in their practice.
How does Medical Acupuncture Work?
Medical Acupuncture (MA) is a useful treatment for many different conditions,. But its primary use has been for the
control of pain. MA is in an attempt to interrupt noxious sensory impulses sending to the central nervous system (CNS)
which causes pain. The insertion and stimulation of needles give rise to a certain sensation and stimulation of needles
give rise to certain sensation from various of sensory receptors (nociceptors) and their associated afferent nerve
fibers such as subcutaneous large A-delta and small C afferent nerve fibers in muscles, this process also involves
in a number of facilitator and inhibitory modulating mechanisms in different parts of the CNS, for instance, the
midbrain, the thalamus and the cerebral cortex.
The famous “Gate-Control” theory (Melzack & Wall) primarily discovered that A-delta nociceptors perform and inhibitory
effect on C nerve fibers input to the spinal cord. Medical Acupuncture practice, in the form of Dry Needling Technique on myo
facial trigger points, has proved that the needle induced A-delta afferent activity is enabled to block C afferent nerve fibers
around trigger points carrying pain impulses to the brain, it is so called “Close the Gate”. This needling skills have demonstrated
its treat success for pain relief in the treatment of neuropathic (nerve irritation) pain such as Fibromyalgia and my facial pain
syndrome. It brings about pain relief for weeks, months, even permanently.
Facilitating with electric-stimulation technique, MA presents even long-lasting result in pain management Research has found
during Electric-Acupuncture, endorphin levels rise in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid; it also affects certain neurotransmitter
levels such as serotonin and norepinephrine. For the reason of the body’s neurochemistry changes, clinically, Electric-Acupuncture
treatment has shown its ideal effect in helping patients establish their own natural healing ability in healing with physical pain,
emotional disorder as well as neuro-hormone imbalances.
How safe is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has approved track record of being incredibly safe and effective for many different illnesses. The 1997 National
Institute of Health Consensus Conference on Acupuncture stated, “The data in support of acupuncture is as strong as those for
many accepted Western medical therapies. One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially
lower than that of many drugs of other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions. “One of the primary concerns people have
about acupuncture is the handling and hygiene of the acupuncture needles are used once and then discarded. The acupuncturist
also practices by a strict code of hygienic principles known as “Clean Needle Technique”, which helps to negate the risk of infection.
